WHO I AM – A Women’s Issues Feature

Kurt's avatarKURT BRINDLEY

I am very honored and excited to share our very first submission to the new Relating to Humans feature.

Before we get to the submission, however, I would like to say a few words by way of introduction.

You know, I am a writer, which means…I’m insecure. I am. Every time I hit the “Publish” button to release my stuff out into this wild world, I get more than a little apprehensive wondering if it’s going to be well received, or not. Such was the case when I put this new Relating to Humans feature out there. I was a little nervous, wondering if anyone would take it seriously; if anyone would care to participate.

Which is why I am so honored and excited to be introducing you to the poetry of becausethisishowisaythings. She, with her one submission, helped to validate what this new feature is all about.

Maroon 5’s Animals

This song is on the shitlist because it is absolutely horrible! How in the hell has this song not caused outrage everywhere? Yes, it’s catchy… what about the lyrics, the video and the blatant stalking and rape culture? That catchy too? Is that alright? This song is so explicitly creepy and Levine’s actions in it are so clearly illegal, I’m stunned. For Christ’s sake, the video starts with him seeing her in a butchers shop and proceeding to stalk her and take pictures. He baths himself and her in blood at the end in an imaginary sex scene AFTER BEING TURNED DOWN IN REALITY! I’m pissed about this song… you may have noticed. If for some reason you are not convinced by the video below, there is the full lyrics below that.

Baby, I’m preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals

Maybe you think that you can hide
I can smell your scent for miles
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals
Baby, I’m

So what you trying to do to me
It’s like we can’t stop we’re enemies
But we get along when I’m inside you
You’re like a drug that’s killing me
I cut you out entirely
But I get so high when I’m inside you

Yeah, you can start over, you can run free
You can find other fish in the sea
You can pretend it’s meant to be
But you can’t stay away from me
I can still hear you making that sound
Taking me down, rolling on the ground
You can pretend that it was me
But no

Baby, I’m preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals

Maybe you think that you can hide
I can smell your scent for miles
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals
Baby, I’m

So if I run it’s not enough
You’re still in my head forever stuck
So you can do what you wanna do
I love your lies, I’ll eat ’em up
But don’t deny the animal
That comes alive when I’m inside you

Yeah, you can start over you can run free
You can find other fish in the sea
You can pretend it’s meant to be
But you can’t stay away from me
I can still hear you making that sound
Taking me down rolling on the ground
You can pretend that it was me
But no

Baby, I’m preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals

Maybe you think that you can hide
I can smell your scent for miles
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals
Baby, I’m

Don’t tell no lie-lie-lie-lie
You can’t deny-ny-ny-ny
That beast inside-side-side-side
Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, girl, don’t lie-lie-lie-lie
You can’t deny-ny-ny-ny
The beast inside-side-side-side
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Yo…
Whoa…
Whoa…
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals
Just like animals (yeah…), animals (yeah…), like animals-mals (yeah…)
Ow

Baby, I’m preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals

Maybe you think that you can hide
I can smell your scent for miles
Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals
Baby, I’m

Don’t tell no lie-lie-lie-lie
You can’t deny-ny-ny-ny
That beast inside-side-side-side
Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, girl, don’t lie-lie-lie-lie
You can’t deny-ny-ny-ny
That beast inside-side-side-side
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Time Magazine wonders if we should ban the word Feminist. We shouldn’t.

Christopher ZF's avatarThe Stake

2014 MTV Video Music Awards - Fixed Show

In a reader survey, Time Magazine is asking what word should be banished from the lexicon in 2015. The candidates include mostly online turns of phrase and slang, such as obvi, basic and om nom nom nom, among others.

Also on the list? Feminist.

What’s wrong with the word feminist? Time explains:

feminist: You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state their position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.

What? What are you talking about, Time Magazine?

Feminist is one of the best words of 2014. Uttered by actors and politicians and writers and gamers and radio-hosts, positively and negatively. Promoted by pro-equality women and men of all ages all year…

The global statistics on the abuse of girls are numbing. It appears that more girls have been killed in the last fifty years, precisely because they were girls, than men were killed in all the battles of the twentieth century. More girls are killed in this routine “gendercide” in any one decade than people were slaughtered in all the genocides of the twentieth century. | In the nineteenth century, the central moral challenge was slavery. In the twentieth century, it was the battle against totalitarianism. We believe that in this century the paramount moral challenge will be the struggle for gender equality around the world. http://vialogue.wordpress.com/2012/04/12/half-the-sky-review-notes/

Nicki Minaj’s Only

The newest video from Nicki Minaj and crew is very obviously a lyric video glorifying Nazis. At least she apologized…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rnRdlkuX0I

But lets not just focus on the video, as the song itself is weirdly defensive. Did you notice that the whole song is pretty much about who Nicki Minaj has fucked? It seems as though Minaj is defending her fame and her choice to share her body with who she wants. Of course, it gets especially creepy when the guys come in and rap about how they would fuck her…
While I find her to be offensive at times and down right strange other times, she is still talented and does not need to justify that as her own ability instead of her sharing her body with rappers to get ahead. Let alone the lyric about BBWs (Big Black Women), what the hell? Check out the lyrics below and let me know what you think?
[Verse 1: Nicki Minaj]
Yo, I never fucked Wayne, I never fucked Drake
On my life, man, fuck’s sake
If I did I menage with ’em and let ’em eat my ass like a cupcake
My man full, he just ate, I don’t duck nobody but tape
Yeah, that was a set up for a punchline on duct tape
Worried ’bout if my butt’s fake
Worry ’bout yall niggas, us straight
These girls are my sons, John and Kate plus eight
When I walk in, sit up straight, I don’t give a fuck if I was late
Dinner with my man on a G5 is my idea of an update
Hut one, hut two, big bitties, big butt too
Fuck with them real niggas who don’t tell niggas what they up to
Had to show bitches where the top is, ring finger where the rock is
These hoes couldn’t test me even if their name was pop quiz
Bad bitches who I fuck with, mad bitches we don’t fuck with
I don’t fuck with them chickens unless they last name is cutlet
Let it soak in like seasonin’
And tell ’em, tell ’em blow me, Lance Stephenson

[Hook: Chris Brown]
Raise every bottle and cup in the sky
Sparks in the air like the fourth of July
Nothing but bad bitches in here tonight
Oh, if you lame and you know it be quiet
Nothing but real niggas only, bad bitches only
Rich niggas only, independent bitches only
Boss niggas only, thick bitches only
I got my real niggas here by my side, only

[Verse 2: Drake]
I never fucked Nicki cause she got a man
But when that’s over then I’m first in line
And the other day in her Maybach
I thought god damn, this is the perfect time
We had just come from that video
You know LA traffic, how the city slow
She was sitting down on that big butt
But I was still staring at the titties though
Yeah, lowkey it may be high key
I been peeped that you like me, you know
Who the fuck you really wanna be with besides me?
I mean, it doesn’t take much for us to do this shit quietly
I mean, she say I’m obsessed with thick women and I agree
Yeah, that’s right, I like my girls BBW, yeah
Type to wanna suck you dry and then eat some lunch with you
Yeah, so thick that everybody else in the room is so uncomfortable
Ass on Houston Texas, but the face look just like Clair Huxtable
Oh, yeah, you the man in the city when the mayor fuck with you
The NBA players fuck with you
The bad ass bitches doing makeup and hair fuck with you
Oh, that’s cause I believe in something, I stand for it
And Nicki if you ever tryna fuck
Just give me the heads up so I can plan for it

[Hook]
Raise your bottle and cup in the sky
Sparks in the air like the fourth of july
Nothing but bad bitches in here tonight
Oh, if you lame and you know it be quiet
Nothing but real niggas only, bad bitches only
Richest niggas only, independent bitches only
Boss niggas only, thick bitches only
I got my real niggas here by my side, only

[Verse 3: Lil’ Wayne]
I never fucked Nicki and that’s fucked up
If I did fuck she’d be fucked up
Whoever is hittin’ ain’t hittin’ it right
Cause she actin’ like she need dick in her life
That’s another story, I’m no story teller
I piss greatness like gold is yellow
All my goons so overzealous
I’m from Holly Groove, the holy Mecca
Calender say I got money for days
I squirm and I shake, but I’m stuck in my ways
My girlfriend will beat a bitch up if she wave
They bet not fuck with her surfboard, surfboard
My eyes are so bright, I take cover for shade
Don’t have my money? I take mothers instead
You got the hiccups, you swallowed the truth
Then I make you burp, boy, treat beef like sirloin
I’m talkin’ bout runnin’ in houses with army guns
So think about your son and daughter rooms
Got two hoes with me, messed up, they got smaller guns
Ain’t thinkin’ bout your son and daughter rooms
This is just crazy my nigga, I mean brazy, my nigga
That money talk, I just rephrase it, my nigga
Blood gang take the B out behavior, my nigga
Fucking for reals if you mouth off I blow your face off
I mean pop-pop-pop then I take off
Now you see me, now you don’t
Like Jamie Foxx acting like Ray Charles
16 in a clip, one in the chamber
17 ward bully with 17 bullets
My story is how I went from poor me
To police pour me a drink and celebrate with me

[Hook]
Raise your bottle and cup in the sky
Sparks in the air like the fourth of july
Nothing but bad bitches in here tonight
Oh, if you lame and you know it be quiet
Nothing but real niggas only, bad bitches only
Richest niggas only, independent bitches only
Boss niggas only, thick bitches only
I got my real niggas here by my side, only

#takedownjulienblanc

Recently self-proclaimed master pickup artist Julien Blanc has come under fire for his “educational” seminars teaching men to control, humiliate and be persistent (as he puts it) when trying to hook up with women. In these seminars which can cost up to $3000 per ticket, Blanc has been recorded telling men that no doesn’t mean no but is a weak excuse that is “irrelevant”. Furthermore, there is now video surfacing of Blanc’s seminars in Japan where he tells white men that they can get away with anything in regards to Japanese women, just yell: Pikachu, including taking women’s heads and forcing them down to his junk. His world tour to spread his “game” has had some hiccups due to the hash-tag campaign: #takedownjulienblanc. This activist campaign resulted in Australia revoking his visa and asking him to leave. Currently there is another leg of this campaign happening as his next reported stops along his tour is to the UK and Canada. #keepjulienblancoutofcanada is vastly growing.

What do I think about this? He’s a scumbag that knows how to work women’s insecurities and relies on intimidation to not only get himself laid but to try to get other guys laid too. What bothers me most about Julien Blanc is the physical assault he is doing and worse of all, encouraging. It is not okay to force a woman’s head down to your crotch nor is it okay to hold a woman by the neck. These are things that Blanc has been recorded doing in an effort to “pull” women home with him. While I am extremely happy that his misogyny and racist remarks are being addressed, I can’t help but to wonder why he is not being charged with a crime? He is blatantly advocating sexual harassment and possibly assault. It is not a far reach to say that he is spreading hate speech and ways to enact it against women. Yet ultimately, Blanc is not the root cause of sexism or racism but is instead an example of it. While sexism and racism are such huge and highly complicated issues which are not easily defeated, let alone recognized, we can stand up against them by standing up against assholes like Blanc who knowingly use patriarchy and white privilege to take advantage over women and teach other men how to do it too.

Femi- what? My Feminism at this exact moment

Firstly, everyone has their own kind of feminism and how they choose to enact or do activist activities around it. This is because everyone has their own life experiences, social standing and concerns which inform how they are feminist. Personally, I am a cis-gendered (my bits match my gender identity as female) and yet I am bi-sexual. Furthermore, I am a visibly caucasian, able-body, middle class Canadian. I grew up poor and yet go to university now and am studying English and Women & Gender Studies. All of these factors and more inform what my feminism is and how I believe that feminism must be diverse to fully include everyones experience. Yet, my experiences and how I choose to enact my feminism through creative activism like my radio show does not mean that I am speaking for everyone. In fact, the point of feminism is to make sure we don’t speak for others but instead let them speak about their experiences and make sure we value those people. I can’t speak for the experiences of trans identified individuals as I do not identify nor have I experienced what life is like as a trans individual. Yet, I am an ally and I find the politics of sex, gender, sexuality, the body and how they all interact in the lives of trans individuals as interesting and extremely important to talk about and make visible. I’m not a spokesperson nor some cis-gendered saviour, I am an ally… if they will have me.
Yet, I haven’t really addressed what feminism is. Again, how someone identifies as feminist and why is incredibly individual and differs greatly person to person. Yet what most can agree is the core of feminist ideology is equality for all. But I disagree. Equality for all means that we should treat everyone as if they are exactly the same, but we are NOT! Difference is not a bad thing nor should we all become some Stepford Wives idea of men and women where we are all terrifyingly the same. I am not the same as my friend from Ghana or another friend who is differently able or disabled. I don’t have the same experiences as those people and just as feminism isn’t the same for everyone, nor is everyone the same as everyone… and that’s AWESOME. Instead of try to make everyone the same (never-mind that you have to figure out what the status quo of equality is, which might be fairly euro-centric, and able-bodied) why not celebrate difference? Difference is a reality of our daily lives as living beings. Instead of equality how about equity? We acknowledge difference and we VALUE IT! People shouldn’t have their race, class, sex, gender, disability erased because “we” think it’s bad but instead we should love and cherish that difference just as we should love and cherish our own. Love ourselves and love others based on not what we wish they were but instead on how they are not. That doesn’t mean we should not be advocating for more opportunities around the world for all of those who are marginalized. Instead, seek to value the amazing abilities of those around us and not assume that someone is less useful or more inclined to do something wrong. Perhaps, I am too idealistic and try to be too positive about the human race but I do believe in the idea that you are innocent until proven guilty, why not apply that to say, race politics and racism around the world. One is not automatically guilty of being less or dangerous because one is black, hispanic or a man. Yet, on the same note, those who are dangerous or guilty, as my analogy goes, we can expect the individual to take responsibility but we must also expect society and the socialization which is formative in why every person around the world does what they do, to take responsibility.

Equity for All!
Lilith Out!
